The red swamp crayfish is a physical ecosystem engineer – known for constructing burrows with a single opening that can accommodate up to two crayfish. These crayfish are opportunistic omnivores eating anything from insects, to other crayfish, mollusks, and even fish. This species has a fairly short life cycle, and is sexually mature in as little as two months. Females can produce up to 700 eggs at one time, depending on her size, water temperature, and population density! They have no specific breeding season and can incubate eggs and carry them year round, which contributes to the abundance of the species. They exhibit two types of behaviors – short peaks of high speed movement, and an immobile stage where they hide in their burrow and only come out at dusk to forage for food. In many locations, the red swamp crayfish is considered an invasive species. Their deep red color has led to them be advertised as freshwater “lobster” for aquariums, though much smaller. Their original native range was gulf coastal plain from the Florida panhandle to Mexico, and the southern Mississippi River drainage to Illinois. They have now expanded into 29 states – proving their adaptive nature to climate variation, pollution levels. And while listed as freshwater, they can withstand a fair amount of salinity. They colonize rice fields, irrigation channels, reservoirs, rivers, lakes, ponds, streams, canals, flooded swamps and marshes and ditches with muddy or sandy bottoms--just about anywhere there's shallow freshwater.
