During 1945 and 1946, Werner Bischof spent six months travelling through half a dozen countries in Europe photographing the effects of World War II. Bischof was working on assignment for Swiss Relief, an organization formed to try and alleviate some of the dire need in Europe, with a particular focus on the continent's children, and was accompanied by Emil Schulthess, a friend and fellow Swiss photographer, who had a darkroom built into the car they were traveling in.
.
Today on magnumphotos.com, we explore Bischof's work from the trip, which documented the devastation of towns and landscapes, as well as the lives of those eking out an existence in them. Link in bio.
