The Little Blitzen Wild and Scenic River cuts a massive U-shaped gorge through the western Flank of Steens Mountain in eastern #Oregon’s high desert. “The Steens” -- as it’s known locally -- is a massive fault block mountain and the state’s sixth highest peak. A 59-mile gravel loop road that’s suitable for passenger vehicles departs from Frenchglen and climbs the gradual western slope to the summit ridge at 9,700 feet – making it Oregon’s highest road. In contrast to the western side, the Steens’ eastern flank plunges almost straight down over a vertical mile to the vast Alvord Desert, offering especially dramatic views. Spring comes late to the high country, and the summit is normally not accessible until late June. While traversing the loop tour, visitors can look for bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope and birds of prey riding the updrafts along the cliffs. More adventurous visitors can pursue recreation activities in the surrounding wilderness and wild and scenic river corridor include camping, hiking, fishing for redband trout and outstanding hunting. The Steens is a very remote area and visitors should come prepared with a full tank of gas and supplies.
