Earlier this year, I signed Mazzy up for a stop motion animation class for a week in August. Her favorite things are drawing and tech, so I thought the class would be perfect. Plus, we haven't really nailed Mazzy's "thing" yet so I was hopeful this might get her motivated. Mazzy was on board when I signed her up, but got upset when she realized nobody she knew would be in the class. I told her that she was lucky to have the opportunity and convinced her it would be okay. Then summer arrived, she started her regular camp and found out that the stop motion class was the same week as "team building" week, which is apparently her favorite week of camp. From what I gather, "team building" week is like Color War. Every night, she would beg me to cancel the class and I told her that we couldn't because I had already paid for it. She was so mad at me. After many tears, I emailed to see if I could get a refund. They said only if they filled the spot, which was unlikely. Then I noticed Mazzy's interest in camp started to wane and I emailed the class to rescind my plea to pull out. The day before class started, Mazzy admitted that she was ready for a change and excited to go. I was so relieved. All last week, she went to this beautiful museum and sat in a huge studio with stations, each outfitted with video cameras, laptops, etc. It looked like a dream. Mazzy was eager to be dropped off and excited to show me her progress each day. She had her final presentation Friday and was so proud to show her movie on the big screen. The plot involved a girl, a robot, a dog, tiny tacos, a huge cupcake and a flying chair. It was creative and filled with so many Mazzy-esque details. In the end, I think the cupcake tried to eat them but they were able to get away on the flying chair, but I’m not 100% sure. The real happy ending was when Mazzy asked if she could go back next year, but for two weeks instead of one. I felt so totally ABOVE AVERAGE for trusting my gut and knowing Mazzy would love it even when she insisted she would not. I think exposing our kids to experiences like this leave such a huge impression on what is possible and I’m thrilled I was able to give that gift to my girl!
