When I dumped out Mazzy's backpack at the end of the school year, casually shoved between a math workbook and her recorder music was this confident girl on top of a mountain, hair blowing in the wind, knocking out whoever gets in her way. I think it's a roller derby? Mazzy is one of those kids who draws on everything. She uses illustrations in her writing and will often use empty spaces on her worksheets to draw out science experiments and Spanish translations in her signature cartoon style. No piece of paper in Mazzy's backpack is boring or underutilized, and there are few things more exciting in our house than when I take out a ream of blank white paper.
