"This image is from the very top of Burleigh Hill on the Gold Coast. This particular morning I was trying to push my D850 to the limits in regards to shadow recovery, to really get to know the camera and what it's truly capable of.
Generally, at sunrise, I will use a graduated filter to balance the sky with the foreground, but for this shot, I left the filters off and just exposed for the sky. This made the foreground extremely dark, but I was able to pull a lot of information out of those shadows to make the image look well balanced and still sharp. Graduated filters are handy and will save you lots of time in post-production, but it's always good to know how far you can push your camera.
