Eclipse of the Moon Photos by @babaktafreshi The World at Night project As I write this the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century is in progress. Except for Central & North America, most parts of the world can see a lunar eclipse tonight. For the American continents another total eclipse is coming in 5 months, on Jan 21, 2019. Regardless of the eclipse, the rising full moon tonight is quite special with Mars next to it, while the Red Planet is in its brightest. In today Q&A on @natgeo facebook I replied questions on how to photograph and see this eclipse and Mars. Also did a live Instagram @babaktafreshi on technical questions (available on my today story). See the second slide of the main show, when the eclipse becomes total (19:30 - 21:13 UT) and the moon appears red and dim in the Earth shadow. It is visible from Europe (evening at moonrise), Africa, Middle East, India, central Asia (around midnight and through the night), East Asia & Australia (morning at moonset). Totality lasts for 103 minutes if you are in the better visibility areas. In a dark sky location, it begins with a bright full moon with only a few stars visible to a black star-filled sky and glorious summer Milky Way during totality. You will see two red objects in the sky near each other, the eclipsed Moon and Mars. The first slide from Aug 2008 shows the eclipsed moon just before totality over an old oak, a fantastic stargazing night I will remember for a long time. #lunareclipse #moon #astrophotography #astronomy #stargazing #twanight @natgeocreative
