Hopefully you have read Anne’s amazing tribute and call to action. Yes, we know #NiaWilson’s killer was mentally ill, but white people are 13% more likely to assault and use weapons against African American (and Hispanics) than the reverse. To quote Anne, “White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence.” Nor do we have the understanding of how black men and women live every day as a perceived threat to the world, asking themselves: Will my clothing choices feel threatening to anyone? Will the speed in which I reach into my glove box get me killed? A path forward is to understand (and speak up) about what it must feel like to have people generally not look you in the eye and clutch their bags as you walk nearby, yet so easily appropriate black culture, music and dance. And the fact that Anne knew well enough to turn off her comments says everything. If Nia had been a white 18-year old white girl, we would be seeing, reading and hearing more about her life, and what her hopes and dreams might have had been. Black lives and deaths do not live on in the news. This story too will die. Let’s ask more so #NiaWilson shall be remembered. ### Repost @annehathaway ・・・ The murder of Nia Wilson- may she rest in the power and peace she was denied here- is unspeakable AND MUST NOT be met with silence.  She is not a hash tag; she was a black woman and she was murdered in cold blood by a white man. White people- including me, including you- must take into the marrow of our privileged bones the truth that ALL black people fear for their lives DAILY in America and have done so for GENERATIONS.  White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence. Given those givens, we must ask our (white)selves- how “decent” are we really?  Not in our intent, but in our actions?  In our lack of action? Peace and prayers and JUSTICE for Nia and the Wilson family xx Note: the comments for this post are closed. #blacklivesmatter #antiracist #noexcuse #sayhername #earntherighttosayhername
