The cruel and painful practice of foot binding in China was banned over a century ago. Breaking and then binding the feet of young girls age 4 to 6 into the shape of a hoof, was once considered a symbol of status and beauty. I photographed these 2 women in a remote village in Yunnan 20 years ago. They were proud of their tiny feet, part of a "dance" group who entertained the curious. Only a few very elderly women with this disability survive today, a relic of China's distant past.
