I’ve learned a few things shooting over a decade in the Southwest. When flying over Navajoland (or any First Nations land) it’s important to know not only the Law of the Land but also the spiritual laws. Many of the most beautiful formations & monoliths like Shiprock, The Totem pole, Spider rock & the mittens of Monument Valley are believed to be direct pathways to the Dińe peoples ancestry. Without getting into the entirety of the mythology, these places all have religious significance & should be considered as such wether they represent your beliefs or not.
Flying drones In many of these places has become completely off limits without permission. Although flying a plane or other larger craft gives you legal permission when flying at safe distance (typically 2000 ft is requested) or taking one of the many aerial tours offered by companies. It is still the best practice to ask permission from Navajo Parks & or the local tribal council & for commercial projects a permit is always required.
Regardless of how you document these places, one of the more important things is to understand the request to never fly directly overtop the sacred features as to not disrupt the connection to ancestry. Thank you @navajomylo for helping me greater understand the significance of these incredible places we all love to photograph so much.
