Hats off to Joeseph Jackson. Say & think what you will. It’s been already said/joked about (my fav joe adage from Martin will forever be “That’s some bullish Hel-La-Do!”—i say that like 10 nights a week) but seriously—imma tread carefully and say that to raise/navigate the lives of 9 kids in Gary Indiana in the early 60s PRE civil rights to just merely “survive and thrive”—-nevermind rule the world—was BEYOND an achievement. He raised 9 superheroes without a manual. In my world “Joe Jackson” was my paraphrased term to describe to people my own dad’s version of black fatherhood. Their response was mostly “oooh?—(a beat later) OOOH! ?” In hindsight do I subscribe to those same theories? (The strict disciplinarian/rule with the belt/tough love method) I’ll be honest, i wrestle with that thought 24/7—lol i went to therapy over those thoughts. I mean it’s funny cute when I speak of those Prince punishments & racing home before the Oprah theme started “or else” or do as I’m told “or else” or you better “Yo MTV Raps that homework or else!”—-or “you better not cry for I give you something to cry about”—- (“or else”= the belt!) those w black fathers know what I’m talkin bout willis. I knew where Mike was coming from when he talked about his strained status w Oprah. My dad and I mended decades of anger/trauma/panic differences about a month before his deathbed. He expressed some regrets over his tactics effecting our general closeness. I get it. It was the crack 80s. You saw what was out there for me and that level of panic makes you go overboard in overburdening guidance. I’m not saying to follow suit (lord knows I won’t) But i understand. I’d like to thank Joseph for offering us hope & inspiration through his sons & daughters. It coulda been way easier to fall into the cracks to the land of statistics of the forgotten. But that will & drive. Gave your kids will & drive, which subsequently gave me will & drive. Respect.
