(Part 1of2) Thx for the reminder @dart_adams , today is the 25th anniversary of my 1st hiphop heartbreak: (no not talking New Edition 30th anniversary #Heartbreak) I’m talking the release of the 3rd #JungleBrothers lp #JBeezWitTheRemedy. Giving you a backdrop, Ive had a few disappointments in my record collecting life but none to the level where it was the equivalent of some girl breaking my heart. I mean I’m STILL in denial about it. In 2013 for its 20th I played in my car swearin to god this album was just 20 years ahead of its time and on some next level ish we just not up on yet. Nah. So then I said “ok, the 25th anniversary? Should fit right in with the times (I should also note I do this to MJ’s #Invincible too—good news #2000Watts is FINALLY warming up to me some 17 years later!) 93 was a banner year for me. Something happens in this industry when you finally decide to jump in the swamp and swim w sharks & alligators. Like enjoying music ain’t the same now that you decide to make this your full fledged mission. You overanalyze everything and suddenly cats you grow up idolizing can either be a peer or a threat to you (and mostly vice versa) so 93 was the last time where hip hops then 6 year unstoppable streak of championship rings was a romantic thing in my life. I mean there were some albums that left me disappointed (Run’s “Back From Hell”, not too sure how Audio Two’s sophomore effort “What More Can I Say?” ranks in my history, but I do remember not caring when I lost that cassette) but this album release man. Jesus. This release? In my eyes was a hate crime. The #JBeez were a part of hip hop’s first official true art collective the #NativeTongues. Mostly sourcing the albums that your favorite rappers at the time were NOT using. Truth be told, their method of sampling made you wanna get into the entire catalogue (liners notes et al) of the jazz records you ignored on your parents shelves. All of them had their areas #DeLaSoul took quirky stuff and just found the sweet spots and reinvented the genre (in terms of what you can and can’t do) #ATCQ honed in on the best parts of jazz. The ripest loops and melodies and brought it down to earth
