Amazon River Dolphins, Rio Negro, Brazil — Photo by Kevin Schafer — @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック. Ten years ago, I photographed a story for National Geographic on Amazon River Dolphins. Widespread throughout the Amazon-Orinoco River basins, they seemed at the time to have avoided the fate of other freshwater dolphin species around the globe. (The Yangtze River dolphin is now considered extinct, and the dolphins of the Ganges cannot be far behind.) Sadly, in the last decade the situation for Amazon Dolphins has similarly taken a turn for the worse. It is believed that the population has been cut in half since I did my story, largely due to a dramatic increase in hunting: not for human consumption, but to be chopped up for fish bait. The governments of Brazil and Bolivia have stepped in to stop this ghastly practice and protect the dolphins, but the Amazon is vast and notoriously difficult to manage or patrol. To learn more, Google “Amazon Dolphin Decline”. We can’t let this species, 50 million years in the making, vanish from the Earth. savetheboto #projetoboto #boto
