I nominate Audre Lorde to receive a permanent monument in NYC because her writing is company for, as she famously described, "Those of us who stand outside the circle of this society's definition of acceptable women." She helps us "learn... how to take our differences and make them strengths." And she gives us the strength to realize, "the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. They may allow us temporarily to beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change." Or, as her good friend Adrienne Rich put it, "poetry/ isn’t revolution but a way of knowing/ why it must come." ▪️#SheBuiltNYC. Almost all of our public monuments celebrate straight white men. It’s time we hold space for the best of us. Nominate a woman, group of women or those outside of the gender binary, or event significant to NYC women’s history by August 1 using #SheBuiltNYC and/or on women.nyc. A selection committee will choose five ideas from the nominations and @nyculture will commission at least one permanent public artwork from that list.
