Astronaut Drew Feustel (@astro_feustel) captured this moving image of Kilauea’s current activity in Hawaii, saying, “We can still see the Earth’s fury from ISS as the lava continues to flow from #Kilauea. Expedition 56 is thinking of Hawaii as the dynamic Earth continues to evolve.” Located on the Big Island, Kilauea is one of the state’s most active volcanoes. It’s estimated to be between 300,000 and 600,000 years old and has been erupting since 1983. The recent eruptions started in May after multiple earthquakes hit the island, including a strong earthquake on May 3 that led to the collapse of the Pu'u 'O'o crater on Kilauea and a 6.9-magnitude tremor on May 4. The volcano has spewed lava more than 300ft into the air, and on the morning of May 6, the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument on NASA’s Terra satellite captured images of the top of the eruption plume near the fissure at 6,500ft.
