"When Erich took this picture, in 1949, the war was four years past. He and countless others had returned to civilian life, Magnum was two years old, there were new freedoms in the air. Erich and I had each settled in New York, met and married, and Erich began to assemble a portfolio, to build a career. He had already met Robert Capa: a chance encounter when, portfolio in hand, he took an elevator to the wrong floor for an appointment and found himself facing a door labeled, 'Magnum.' Capa just happened to be there, looked at Erich's pictures and simply said, 'Join us.' Erich thus became associated with Magnum and was soon a full member. . Never without a camera, Erich saw pictures everywhere: at home, with colleagues and friends, in the streets of New York and its art world, and always with the workers and in the work places of the great city.
