It’s a staple of prom night: A boy is crowned prom king and a girl is crowned queen. But the Chicago Gay and Straight Alliance prom isn’t just any prom. This year, Carlos, 16, whose purple hair, fiery red outfit and matching red makeup seemed to beg for a crown, was chosen as #prom queen. And Jovanny, 17, in mint eye shadow, was crowned king. It was a Friday night, and almost 150 high school students from across #Chicago had gathered to celebrate themselves at Robert Lindblom Math & Science Academy. “The teachers here are great, understanding, helpful,” said Elijah, 17, right, about attending the high school. Ri, 16, left, agreed, adding, “I’m trans, and all of my teachers are like, ‘Cool, I understand that.’ And if people in the class mess up my pronouns, they’ll step in.” To qualify for king or queen, students submitted their names based on the categories they chose. The dress code? Decidedly anti-dress code. “It isn’t like those stereotypical middle school dances,” said Ri, who helped decorate the space. “You know, where the girls have to wear these skirts or these dresses, the boys have to wear suits. You can come here in whatever you want. Slay however you want.” @adamjasoncohen took this portrait of the two.
