"I hesitated to choose a picture of the Tiananmen Square protests, which would have been a more obvious illustration of 'freedom.' What made me choose this picture? Maybe it was the woman, and her expression that leads me to believe she feels free. For so many decades, night life was nonexistent in China; then, suddenly, lights, bars, discos invaded the streets of the big cities. The car, as seen in the mythology of the cinema, is often a symbol of freedom: free to go away, sometimes far away. It may be a superficial freedom, but in China, full freedom doesn't exist." - Patrick Zachmann
