“Seahorse” is a name given to 54 different small marine species named after their horse-like appearance. Its genus, Hippocampus, translates from its ancient Greek roots to mean “sea monster.” These adorable fish are far from scary, though. They can be found in seagrass beds, estuaries, coral reefs, and mangroves on both coasts of North and South America and in the Mediterranean. Some of these slow swimmers hold the record for slowest moving fish in the world!
