Listen up! No, this is not a photo from the sequel to A Quiet Place - it’s just me meeting a mentor! Like most rational folks, I’m a fan of @pennandtellerlive. Since the first time I saw them on @Saturday Night Live in the early 80’s, I’ve long loved their outrageous acts of illusions and magic-making (and mocking). But I owe these guys (and Teller specifically) for a big part of my career as well. Their shtick stuck with me - so much so that when I wrote my first feature film, I included a liberal helping of their secret sauce recipe: take one overly-talkative mad man and add one expressive but mute partner-in-crime and make them stand next to each other for decades. I might’ve still made #Clerks without seeing the work of #pennandteller - but there would never be a Silent Bob if the guy beside me in the photo hadn’t opted to professionally shut his mouth eons ago. So this meeting of the mutes was a huge moment for me. As for what two of the most famous non-talkers who never talked talked about? I’ll never tell.
