Another walk down to the horses this morning
through violet brushes of lupin
along the dirt road whose washboards we smoothed by shovel
yesterday then down around the pond (the cat-tails are coming in strong)
watching out for baby rattle snakes
curled up on tiny blankets of sun,
swords hidden in their mouths.
You used to sit me down and tell me stories
The trees over there,
how they are bursting leaves at the same rate the vineyards
are filling up their tiny grapes with
sour mysteries.
And the gravel below me
with each downhill step
reminds me of your voice
and I feel as if I’m walking down
the base of you throat.
Everything reminds me of you.
I walk this morning remembering my childhood
scratched into me images
that will only scar when I wake
and I can’t wake up.
I wish you were here.
The pond’s glistening
with bugs scurrying over the surface
of the water to be eventually snatched
under by large mouth Bass from below.
Everything dies. I remember.
I’d like not to wonder
as I wander
this morning
of anything
