For 2 days every spring and summer, the sunset lines up with the street grid in Manhattan, creating a celestial spectacle. The name #Manhattanhenge is a homage to Stonehenge, where the sunrise is perfectly framed by its stone slabs during the summer solstice. Manhattanhenge is a bit different. “It’s the best sunset picture of the year that you will have in this beautiful city,” Jackie Faherty, an astrophysicist at the @アメリカ自然史博物館 told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ last year. “Sometimes they call it the Instagram holiday.” ? To honor the occasion, we had photographers stationed all over — you guessed it — Manhattan. @elizabethdherman took the first photo near the Flatiron Building, where clouds didn’t faze Manhattanhenge-watchers, and the second in Union Square. @rdegive spent the evening in Times Square; @dave_sanders waited with a crowd on the Tudor City overpass, with a view down 42nd Street; and @kholoodeid was stationed on 57th Street. ? If weather permits, you’ll have a chance to catch Manhattanhenge tomorrow night. Wednesday’s #sunset takes place at 8:12 p.m. (Out of town? You’ll get 2 more shots in July.)
