Late last year, an official with the @nycparks department came across 2 cardboard boxes that had been sitting around for decades. Inside were 2,924 color slides, pictures of parks across NYC’s 5 boroughs late in the summer of 1978. Until recently, none of these images have ever been displayed or published. They’re the work of 8 @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographers: Neal Boenzi, Joyce Dopkeen, D. Gorton, Eddie Hausner, Paul Hosefros, Bob Klein, Larry Morris, and Gary Settle. And they capture escape and discovery in the city’s parks: cricket players, kite flyers, fishermen, old people in floppy hats and young ones in hardly anything. That summer, a strike at the city’s newspapers meant that the photojournalists had some time on their hands. So they met with the city parks commissioner, Gordon J. Davis, and proposed to wander the city. “What they came back with made me cry,” he said. | Visit the link in our profile to see more of these photos, or see them in person at the Arsenal Gallery in @centralparknyc through June 14. Admission to the exhibit, like the parks and starlight, is free. (It’s open Monday through Friday, as well Saturday, June 9.)
