The domestic yak, (Bos grunniens) གཡག is a member of the bovid family. Throughout Tibet and the high Himalaya these animals have provided milk, meat, fur, wool and fuel for generations. They are emblematic of the high mountains as they cannot tolerate heat and humidity. Throughout the Khumbu one is welcomed by these gentle beasts.
With the transition of the Khumbu economy from pastoralism to tourism the prevalence of yaks is diminishing. The younger generation seeks the rewards of urban based work and the older generation is timing out. Some villages have sold off their herds as they no longer have the capacity to tend for them. Change is constant, yet when is affects charismatic species we lament it.
