Since nearby Kilauea first erupted earlier this month, volcanic activity there has destroyed at least 37 structures—including more than two dozen homes—and cost the local tourism industry at least $5 million. Authorities have also cautioned residents that toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide, rising from at least 18 fissures, could lead to difficulty breathing.
