#tbt to April 1990. The late Mugs Stump cleaning an aid pitch high on the Streaked Wall in Zion National Park, Utah. The climbing was slow and tenuous, one sandy placement after another. This was the way back then - headbands made more sense than helmets and free climbing walls wasn’t quite yet where it is today. We had a grand time figuring out the unknown and laughing at the absurdity of inching up an overhanging wall. While its been a quarter century since Mugs moved on, his essential lessons remain. “It’s not that bad and it could be worse”, is the optimists best friend. “It’s your lead” is a neat way of keeping the team motivated. Be passionate about life and climb with determination, grit and endurance.
