The Salish Sea, was so named in 1988 by biologist Bert Webber to define the waters of Georgia Strait, Puget Sound, and Strait of Juan de Fuca. The name was given to create awareness of the combined international waters as an ecosystem. There are about 75 resident orcas in the waters of the Salish Sea, also known as southern resident killer whales (SRKW) and are protected under the Endangered Species Act.
