Human rights activist Nice Nailantei Leng'ete and Kesha (@iiswhoiis) at the #TIME100 Gala in New York City on April 24. Both are TIME 100 honorees this year. "As a Maasai child in Kenya, Nice accomplished something remarkable: she escaped the cut, her culture’s ritualized female genital mutilation. But saving herself was not enough," writes Jaha Dukureh, CEO and founder of Safe Hands for Girls. "As an adult, she has gone on to negotiate with village elders, who traditionally have not worked with women, and convince them that alternative coming-of-age ceremonies will be healthier for girls and better for communities. Her work as a project officer with Amref Health Africa has saved an estimated 15,000 girls around Kenya from the cut, as well as from child marriage." Kesha spoke out against sexual harassment and assault long before the #MeToo movement was making headlines, and nearly lost her career as a result, writes @シンディ・ローパー. "But instead of going away quietly, she fought back. And she made Rainbow, an album that I think includes some of the best songs she’s ever written." See the full #TIME100 list at TIME.com/100.
