Around 20 years ago I started working with lions. When I started ‘canned’ hunting was very much prevalent. 20 years down the road ‘canned’ hunting is as prevalent as it was then despite all the awareness campaigns. Around 1000 captive bred lions get ‘hunted’ every year in this way, many of which were petted as cubs by tourists. Livy in this picture could’ve been one of those. I suppose what I’m trying to say is that nothing has changed. Why? Because there has been and still is no will from government’s side to change the legislation. We can sing and shout until the cows come home, but until such time as there’s a change in thinking as to how this industry is perceived in the law makers of our country’s minds eye, I’m afraid it’s business as usual. As I speak the perception is, that there is nothing wrong with farming lions commercially for cub petting, canned hunting and the lion bone trade.
