This man expects to run a 2:50 in the @bostonmarathon tomorrow. 6 months ago, an accident almost ended his career. The story of Tim Don, the Ironman king, is in many ways the embodiment of elite endurance athletes. In October, @tri_thedon was preparing for the Ironman world championship in Hawaii, when a car smashed into his bike. The 40-year-old had what’s known as a hangman’s fracture. His doctor laid out his options: A hard collar would let the bones mend on their own, but was inadvisable because of the severity of the injury. Surgery would fuse the vertebrae, but it would limit his neck’s range of motion. Or he could have a halo. “The halo is like a medieval torture device,” the doctor explained. “It’s a miserable experience, but it’s the best option for a complete recovery with no limitations in the long run. You take titanium pins and screw them into your skull, 2 in front and 2 in back, and attach them to metal bars, which attach to a bust that you wear for 3 months and that you can’t take off. It’s pure torture. But it works.” @tri_thedon opted for the halo — which was torture, indeed, but it worked. “I’ve never had another job, and this sport is my way of life,” he said. “I don’t know any other way.” @nickcotephoto took these pictures of Tim in physical therapy and in various stages of training.
