Magret Yama was a schoolgirl when Boko Haram abducted her and more than 200 other girls in Nigeria, 4 years ago today. The high-profile kidnapping, which inspired the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls, brought international attention to the group. Magret was released by Boko Haram last May. Now, along with more than 100 of her classmates, she’s trying to rebuild her life. All in their 20s now, the women are housed at @aunigeria in a program that sometimes seems designed for elementary students. “Remember to flush the toilet and wash your hands,” reads a poster on the bulletin board. Messages of positive thinking are plastered on every wall: Never give up. Believe in yourself. Shine like stars. Even their church service is watered down. Raymond Obindu keeps his sermons more uplifting than the ones he delivers to his local congregation. “The Bible says you are fearfully and wonderfully made,” he said during a recent service. “Everyone say, ‘I’m beautiful.’ ” “I’m beautiful,” the room of women chanted. He asked if anyone wanted to give thanks. “I thank God for leaving me alive,” Magret said. @adamfergusonphoto and @dionnesearcey met and photographed Magret and 82 of her classmates. “Our hope was to portray them through a series of portraits in a dignified manner, as the young women they had become,” @dionnesearcey writes.
