“Mermaid Bar” had been a fixture on the strand in Hermosa Beach for 60 years, set to just north of the pier. It didn’t have a high rating on yelp, probably didn’t always pass health inspections with flying colors…it was a beach-dive bar for locals. It sold its last beer in 2017 and will soon be turned into a popular burger joint…I’m sure it will be just fine, the owners have said they’ll pay homage to Mermaid in it’s design. .
All the new places are fine, clean, new, delicious, but forgive me as I feel a bit of sadness as these iconic places continue to disappear around the South Bay. I get it, progress and all that. .
So I’ve taken to try and capture a few of them before they disappear forever. I’ve been trying to capture a shot of the Mermaid sign over the last few months before it comes down. I hadn’t found the right subject or angle or light…it just wasn’t happening. .
Then during the #KodakInCA photowalk this last Sunday…this guy takes down the chain leading into the empty parking lot and drives his ’49 Chevy into the first spot, sits on the headlight to enjoy what could be one of the last sunsets this storied car and old bar share next to each other. Got my shot. #peetscars
