White people: if what you know about MLK’s politics doesn’t challenge what you see as your responsibility in racial justice work and in ending inequality, then you might as well be honoring the Easter Bunny. Yes, you who voted for Obama. Yes, you who voted for Hillary and you who voted for Bernie. I mention you specifically because I am concerned that you may see your support of “better” candidates as an exemption to this post. If all MLK does for you is inspire you to feel “warm and fuzzy,” “positivity,” and “sadness about “how it was back then” then I suggest you read or reread his ‘Letter From Birmingham Jail’ (Google will do the trick) and imagine it was written today. Wonder about the discomfort that you may feel in the way some People of Color DEMAND justice, and not just ASK for it as “politely” as you might think they should. Think about if that makes you one of the “white moderates” that MLK wrote about in his letter as a greater threat to the pursuit of equality than the KKK. Collective white resistance to growth and expansion of consciousness around racism and privilege is what keeps racism firmly intact. It’s what destroys Black and Brown bodies, and puts them in cages at disproportionate rates. It’s also what keeps us from seeing our own stake in ending white supremacy. It’s what keeps the hearts and minds of white folks narrowly constricted to seeing things as they are, without imagining them as what they could be. But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can look inside your heart, and know that moments of growth come from discomfort. Are you willing to really imagine a world where you everyone’s life is treated equally? Are you willing to listen to what People or Color who are leaders in anti-racist organizing will ask of you in order to be an ally? Are willing to struggle for liberation? Well...are you?
