Alice and Alfred Liechtenstein's 12th-century castle in the east Austrian hills, @SchlossHollenegg, has been in Alfred's family for nearly 2 centuries. Like many very large old houses — and especially the hundreds of privately owned, inhabitable castles in Austria — @SchlossHollenegg was in a state of neglect when the couple inherited it. The worn limestone of the Renaissance-style stairway dates from 1577 and the bedrooms, with their Flemish tapestries and 4-poster beds, from the late 18th century. The couple tried to restore the house with as many historically correct materials as they could, but decided that any new additions would be unapologetically modern. If Hollenegg was far from the world of contemporary design, why not bring that world there? The Liechtensteins have invited a number of rising stars of the contemporary design world to create a unquestionably modern home, which @simonpwatson photographed while on assignment for @tmagazine. Seen here: Alice Liechtenstein in the castle's "winter dining room." Follow @tmagazine to see more.
