Free-ranging orangutan mother in Borneo swamp forest strips a vine to make it string-like and uses it to floss her teeth! This is the first time in almost 50 years of watching orangutans that I’ve seen this behavior. Orangutan in forest flossing her teeth is not going to make newspaper or media headlines. Orangutans are not known as tool-users and tool-makers in the same way that wild chimpanzees are. Wild chimpanzees exhibit complexes of tool-using and tool-making that are cultural patterns learned from one generation to another. Orangutan tool use often seems more idiosyncratic. Nonetheless orangutan took-use is amazing in its flexibility and variety.
