I recently got another chance to climb to the top of the church steeple in my German hometown Alsfeld. It was a reshoot of a photograph I had taken 20 years ago for a story about the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales for National Geographic magazine.
Again I made my way up the narrow spiral staircase. Overlooking the town this time, I realized that nothing had changed. Coincidentally, even the weather was exactly the same as it had been 20 years ago, with light snow that had dusted the roofs of the middle-aged houses.

The town of Alsfeld, located in the state of Hesse, was first mentioned in an official document in 1069 and received its township rights in 1222. It is known for its historical circular center of half-timbered houses. The town-hall (in the foreground) built between 1512 and 1516, is one of Germany’s most important and  beautiful half-timbered town-hall buildings.
