The sculptor Huma Bhabha is the next artist to be featured in the popular roof-installation series at the @メトロポリタン美術館. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, she first made her mark in the art world with paint. But over time, she has found her work getting more 3-dimensional. “It was not a dissatisfaction with painting in any way,” she said. “I felt the work leaving the wall gradually and coming out to the floor. I was realizing, ‘Why not just have it stand up?’” For her @メトロポリタン美術館 installation, she’s turning to cork — relatively unusual in the world of sculpture, but one of her go-to materials these days. “I like texture,” she said. “I work with my hands, and I like to feel it.” The installation, “We Come In Peace,” will be on view April 17 through October 28. She called it “huge exposure and a huge opportunity.” She added, “It’s obviously very exciting to be chosen for that, with the nature of my work.” Though some details are traditionally kept under wraps, Huma said that it will comprise 2 large figures and that she was treating the roof as “a landing pad where these figures have arrived.” Visit the link in our profile to read more about #HumaBhabha, who was photographed in her studio in Poughkeepsie, New York, by @lrnlncstr.
