My mom saved this copy of our local newspaper, which is dated April 23, 2000. I’m gobsmacked for two reasons: 1.) It documents my earliest experiences with flat irons and highlights (remember Sun-In?) and 2.) It’s been nearly 20 years since the Columbine school shooting and we are still organizing rallies about gun control in this country. That’s shocking! (According to the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, there have been 40 school shootings in the U.S. since 2000.) I continue to be moved by the strength and compassion of the students in Parkland, Florida, and I watch as they march today with a mix of bittersweet excitement, amazement and even a little pride. #neveragain
