They are astronomers, lawyers, postal workers, heavy machine operators and grandmothers. The group of roller derby athletes are “reclaiming” their space, promoting female empowerment and standing up for indigenous people everywhere. Team Indigenous, which includes 20 athletes from indigenous communities in Canada, the United States, South America, New Zealand and elsewhere around the globe, is one of 38 competing in the 2018 Roller Derby World Cup. It is the first such team to compete, and it is one of the few teams that are not mostly white. With team members around the globe, in-person training was out of the question, so they shared coaching tips online. The conversation naturally drifted as the athletes talked about their various nations, their family histories and their connection with their heritages. For these women, representing Team Indigenous is clearly not just about winning. “We skate to bring more indigenous women to this sport, to provide a space of solidarity, strength and love,” said Melissa Waggoner, who has skated on Team U.S.A. The team wants to shed light on the treatment of indigenous communities and raise funds for “Missing and Murdered Women USA,” a charity based in the U.S. @rachelclarareed took these photos of the team.
