Each summer, thousands of brown pelicans journey from southern wintering grounds in South Carolina, Florida and Cuba to the Chesapeake Bay to breed on the marshy islands of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The brown pelicans that nest in the Chesapeake Bay bred here for the first time in 1987. However, little is known about the daily habits of these migratory birds once they reach the Chesapeake Bay, how long they stay and the full range of their habitat. Working with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center scientist Autumn-Lynn Harrison deployed GPS tags on the Bay’s brown pelicans to track their migrations and better understand these iconic birds. This project will provide insight into how population ranges are expanding and how this large avian predator uses Chesapeake Bay habitats. You can follow the birds on their journey by visiting http://www.migratoryconnectivityproject.org/pelicans.html. #WorldWildlifeDay #WeSaveSpecies #YearoftheBird #BirdYourWorld
