Photo by @Cristina Mittermeier // By the 1970s nobody in Hawaii remembered the ancient art of wayfinding or “celestial navigation”, so a group of brave Hawaiians set out to re-learn it. Wayfinding or navigating by observing the stars, tides, and currents, was used by ancient polynesians to travel across the Pacific and lived only in the minds of only a handful of Micronesian navigators who still remembered. Determined to revive it, they reached out to their brethren in Micronesia and with their help, they built the Hōkūle’a, a replica of the old Hawaiian double-hull canoes they sailed in the past. Crewed by Hawaiians, this vessel has traveled around the globe several times, sharing a message of hope, and protection of our island planet: Earth.
