Hey you.... thanks for listening in and taking a moment to read this caption. Over the dozen years that I’ve been part of social media the overall tone you bring to the conversation has been positive and constructive. It’s likely we share similar values. We care for fellow humans, we care for the planet that supports us and we try to reduce suffering with the choices we make. It’s called being human. We affirm our place in a larger community by speaking out, advocating for good and listening to the feedback from those around us. If you’ve been part of this dialogue you’re aware I post peace mandalas after our nation is struck by gun violence. It’s a simple collage of seasonal colors to encourage us to stop and share a moment of respect and dignity for the families struck down by senseless murder. The empathy we have for the families and the community of Parkland, Florida is real. We are saddened. I’ve dealt with loss in the mountains. It’s part of the price we pay for adventure. My family has been struck by the random, uncaring and merciless power of cancer. These I accept and make a concerted effort to lessen the weight of loss. What I don’t get are violent massacres triggered by the availability of combat grade weapons. We all pay the price of heightened anxiety knowing in the back of our minds that random gun violence could strike our family and community. The shooting on 14 February 2018 won’t be the last. We get this. Yet as a society if we don’t address the issue of gun violence we are not moving forward. Shouldn’t we be creating a better world for the next generation? Agreed we can do better? We good with that? At the end of the day I’m a mountain climber. Posting peace mandalas only gets us so far. Does it make me feel better? Is it making a difference? Ever so slightly. There are people that can make a difference. As a citizen of the United States and a resident of Montana I’m asking our elected officials to address this issue. Four men under the oath of office, dedicated to doing good: @jontester @stevedaines @governorbullock @greggianforte Let’s look at Canada and Australia, two countries with similar demographics, and see what we can learn
