#Why has Norway won the most medals in #WinterOlympics history? Consider the legendary story of Oddvar Bra and his broken ski pole. In 1982, the Norwegian cross-country skier collided with a skier from the Soviet Union. Somehow, a national myth was born. If you’re from Norway, and you’re over 50, you almost certainly have a vivid recollection of this: Surging up a hill, Oddvar passes and sideswipes the only person ahead of him, Alexander Savyalov of the Soviet Union. Immediately, he realizes that the impact has had a terrible consequence. His right pole has snapped in 2. As if on cue, someone in the crowd bolts into view and hands off a pole. (Yes, this is allowed.) His equilibrium restored, Oddvar battles Alexander in a sprint to the finish line. After staring at an image of the finish for about an hour, the judges decided that the 2 skiers had tied for first. In #Pyeongchang, Norway is undoubtedly about to produce another collection of Nordic skiing legends. But no matter how many gold medals Norway’s finest bring home, none will achieve the level of veneration #OddvarBra has experienced the past 36 years. @andrew_testa photographed Oddvar Bra skiing in the hills near Furnes, Norway, last month.
