In honor of #LittleRedCorvette’s 35th anniversary yesterday ——@Prince’s 1st top 10 hit which allowed him to shadow #BillieJean on the “another cool black dude we can fawn over” side of things (epic/cbs threatened @MTV if they didn’t play MJ which then *poof* turns to be a master move benefitting both. P was next) which then gained him fans like #StevieNicks (night of her honeymoon she heard LRC in the car, wrote the lyrics to what would become #StandBack & asked Prince to come to the studio w her & #JimmyIovine to program the instruments (synth/drums) she gave him credit) & #JohnCougar would put his cassette player to the mic in the middle of his show nightly & tell the audience Prince was the future of music. Not to mention I consider LRC to be the 1st remix (Sly’s #ThankYouForTalkingToMeAfrica was more reinterpretation than enhancing the same song & disco culture would edit and extended and add more elements)—hearing this remix was the first time music stopped me cold: morphing a C sharp major rock song into THE BLACKEST THANG ever by going to the B flat relative minor—like the last 2 mins of that song i was like “is this allowed to happen?” like legit confused—-it’s the same song but this don’t sound like the album version—it’s funkier! Well all of this meant bigger stadiums & eventually this song allowed Purple Rain to be green lit (MJ made movies out of videos, Prince made MTV in the movies) —-anywho go to @stephengranthill’s feed to see some amazing photos from the last days of Prince obscurity. #Repost @stephengranthill ・・・ 35 years ago today, Prince, The Time and Vanity 6 played the Providence Civic Center and I took some pictures. Incidentally, this concert was THE day after “Little Red Corvette” was released as a single...so at that point, he had devoted fans ??‍♂️, but hadn’t had pop success yet. He was still...ours.
