There were rumors before kickoff that Timberlake’s set would include a hologram of Prince, who died in April 2016, igniting criticism from fans and those who knew him. As TIME’s television critic Daniel D’Addario writes, Timberlake’s tribute to an artist with whom he’d exchanged occasional barbs in life felt like the sort of constituent-pleasing work a pop star isn’t supposed to have to do anymore. Timberlake paid fleeting homage to the late star, D’Addario adds, because Prince was a popular singer from the Super Bowl’s host city, not because of any particular fellow feeling.
