Photo by @bethjwald // An elderly Kyrgyz man peers over glasses that are held on by string, inside a hut at a winter camp in the Little Pamirs, of the Wakhan Corridor, Afghanistan. A small population of Kyrgyz (also spelled Kirghiz) live a nomadic life in this high, remote finger of northeast Afghanistan, that shares borders with Tajikistan to the north, China to the east and Pakistan to the south. Originally from areas of western Mongolia and northern China, the Kyrgyz are a Turkic ethnic group; groups of Kyrgyz migrated westward many hundreds of years ago, sparsely populating parts of what are now Kazakhstan, western China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and this corner of Afghanistan. In the road-less Afghan Pamirs, Kyrgyz families move seasonally with their herds of yaks, goats, sheep, camels and horses and must travel many days to reach a road and villages where they can trade for the necessities of life that their animals can’t provide. Life for the Afghan Kyrgyz is hard, especially in winter, but despite many challenges, including lack of education and health care, they are proud of their culture, their ability to survive and their freedom on the “Bam-i-Dunya” or Roof of the World. The photo was taken ten years ago, during a hard, month-long January journey on foot through the frozen winter landscape of the Afghan Pamirs, part of a several year project to document the Kyrgyz and Wakhi peoples of the Wakhan. I am posting more photos from this series – looking back ten years ago- through the week, see more at @bethjwald. #Afghanistan #wakhancorridor #Pamirs #Kyrgyz #mountainculture #Badakshan #elder #roofoftheworld #onassignment #centralasia #hindukush #pastoralist #nikon @thephotosociety @ilcp_photographers @natgeocreative
