Photo by @Cristina Mittermeier // I woke up at 4 in the morning to visit Marina Beach, a long urban sandy beach in the capital city of Chennai, from which thousands of fishermen go out at sea every day. As the sun rose in the horizon, I was able to photograph the fishermen returning with their catch. In the 1990s there were 1.7 million full time fishermen in India. After the 2004 tsunami, thousands of fishermen lost their homes, their boats and their lives, and it has taken 25 years for things to feel like they are fully back to normal. Perhaps the effects of the tsunami allowed some fisheries to recover, but now that a full fishing fleet is back in operation, the catches are getting smaller and smaller and it is easy to see that there too many boats for too few fish.
