Virtual reality is finally gaining traction in New York video boutiques. But is there more to VR than just games? Despite its promise, VR and AR technology is still evolving. The equipment is clunky and the setup's fairly elaborate. “It’s due to the commercial failure of the VR headset that you’re seeing these people use this moment to take the medium to the public,” said Igal Nassima, a programmer and the founder of @superbright_, a firm that creates #VR and #AR experiences. “It’s like the early days of PCs, where we had internet cafes.” @vrworldnyc is 1 of at least 7 #VirtualReality centers that have cropped up across NYCin the last 2 years. To counter the perception that VR is only for hard-core gamers, and to create a livelier atmosphere, @vrworldnyc uses trippy lighting, ’90s dance hits, and a fully stocked bar. So will New York’s brick-and-mortar VR spaces remain fixtures of the city’s streets, or will they go the way of the oxygen bar? It depends on how quickly the technology evolves. @josh_ethan_johnson took this photo at Jump Into the Light, another virtual reality space on Orchard Street in Manhattan.
