@unityskateboarding is a queer skate collective in California, designed as a haven for LGBTQ and gender-nonconforming people from the sometimes-hostile environment the sport has fostered. The group was founded just over a year ago and now hosts monthly skate gatherings in the Bay Area that draw as many as 50 people per session. Some attendees are familiar with skateboarding, but others are new to the sport. @ryshorosky took this photo of Mae Ross, a 20-year-old transgender woman, skating at the Rockridge BART Station in Oakland while on assignment for @nytimesfashion. Mae relocated from Bakersfield to the San Francisco area a year ago, in part to find like-minded people in a city long known for its #LGBTQ population. But at first, she struggled to find skating companions. “I thought I would meet more girl skaters or something, but even if I did, they wouldn’t really talk to me,” Mae said. “None of those hesher bro skaters liked me anyway, even before I transitioned.” Swipe left or visit the link in our profile to see more of @ryshorosky’s photos of this skate community in #TheLookNYT.
