Spent NYE hanging out at @bumisehatbali natural birthing center with evacuees from the Mount Agung volcano eruption. After the second small eruption the 5 villages nearest to the mouth of the volcano were forced to be evacuated due to high levels of sulfur which killed off plants and fish that were in ponds for eating. 130 families with young children and expectant mothers came to Bumi Sehat and were greeted with make emergency housing and food. In the last two months at least a dozen evacuee babies have been born at the center and dozens of young children are still living there in impromptu tents. For NYE we brought them all bamboo whistles and had an impromptu acoustic musical jam session with the families to mark the ending of 2017 and bring in 2018, which will be a very uncertain time for these families. One thing they can count on is Bumi Sehat continuing to provide shelter and food for them until their homes are safe to return to.
